1 Day Upper Animas Rockwood Box Gorge Stretch, Class III-IV Photos
Run after the flows have peaked for the season and the Silverton & Needleton stretches become too low to raft. The 200 foot deep Rockwood Gorge is narrow enough and steep enough to provide exciting Class IV pool-drop rapids late into the summer! We access the gorge with a beautiful train ride into the canyon and end with a 1 mile hike 400 feet up to our waiting vehicle.
“Rockwood Gorge Rafting” My wife and I rafted the Rockwood section of the Upper Animas on July 26. What a beautiful and exciting trip! Elliot, Bama, Aaron, Jeff, Byron, and the rest of the crew took us and two other couples into a very technical section of this gorgeous river. Safety was paramount and we learned a lot besides just having a blast. Those guys are VERY good at what they do and they truly love it. It isn’t just a “job” or a paycheck. They are hilarious and love having fun with you. But at the same time, they were all very professional and serious when we got into a hairy section. Just a solid, damn good time. We will be back.

Just completed the Rockwood Gorge raft trip. Class IV rapids, unique canyon river experience. Probably the best rafting in the state if not the US. Knowledgeable guides, Dale Womack the lead guide is a local legend with 25 years guiding. Great food, great time, challenging rafting and hike out. Highly recommended!
