Monsoons put an end to our driest time of year, they significantly lower our fire danger here in Durango. A second reason we love the short thirty minute rains is simply that they cool town of that hot desert heat we’re dealing with in June and July!

But the most important reason, and our favorite at Mountain Waters Rafting, is that rains adds water to our river. And so BIG WATER continues here in Durango. With another big spike in the water levels today we continue to have a record breaking season on the Animas. Come and join us for a few hours on the water, a little river time is what everyone needs!

It’s that time of year again in Durango! The snow in town has come and gone, and now we wait for those warm spring temperatures to reach high into the San Juans and start melting the Animas River watershed. Over the past week and a half, we’ve seen temps in the mid-70′s and for the first time in 2011 the water in our river has gone from a clear trickle to a muddy brown stream, signifying the first signs of snow melt.

Mountain Waters plans to kick off it’s season on the seventh of May with our guide school. These future professional boatmen will be put through a tough week worth of work, learning all principals of river safety, navigation, and etiquette. At the end of the week, we’ll head up to Silverton for this years first Upper Animas descent. We’ll spend three days in the Animas River canyon setting up our wilderness camp and teaching our students the proper execution of overnight wilderness river trips.

Give us a call and book your trip today. It all depends on the weather when you’re running rivers, but the signs indicate that we should be boating in town by mid-May! Keep an eye on our website, we’ll be sure to keep you updated about the upcoming season! We look forward to seeing you!
